History

The history of classical mechanics is interesting and is closely connected to the lives of some key people. For the most part mechanics in western civilization has had qualitiative beginnings, starting with the works Aristotle, Pythagoras, Archimedes, Ptolemy, and Copernicus. It became more quantitative in the works of Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) and Johannes Kepler (1571-1630).

There is an interesting history concerning the invention of the calculus by Isaac Newton (1642-1727) and Gottfired Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716). This story involves  a fight for the claim of who invented calculus first as described in the recent book,   The Calculus Wars .
